Corrosion is fundamental process which plays an important role in economics and safety [1]. Marine corrosion is
a perennial problem not only to moving vessel but also ports and anything kept in the sea or exposed to sea
environment for a period of time. Apparently, corrosion cannot be avoided, but its severity can be reduced to a
lower magnitude. Corrosion of mild steel is a problem in many industries that has attracted the attention of
researchers [2]. Many ship superstructures, pipes and liquid cargo containers are made of low carbon steel [3]. A
number of ways such as material selection, cathodic or anodic protection, coatings and the use of corrosion
inhibitors have been used to reduce corrosion in industry [4].
In this work the corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel in Tunisia seawater by Cynara Cardunculus extract was
investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
measurements. Results showed that Cynara Cardunculus extract acts as a good mixed type (cathodic/anodic)
inhibitor. The dissolution rate decreased with the increase of the Cynara Cardunculus extract concentration.
Surface analysis of the samples was performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with chemical analysis
(SEM-EDS).
