2018 Investigation of Mechanical Properties and Microstructure after Artificial Ageing in the Aluminum 6082 Alloy

The aluminum-based 6xxx alloys are extensively used in the automotive industry due to their combination of low density, high resistance and good formability. In these alloys, the thermal induced strengthening processes are very pronounced, and result from a complex precipitation sequence [1]. Aluminum alloy 6082 has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys and is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, aluminum alloy 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of aluminum alloy 6082 offers a possible replacement 6061 in many applications [2]. Currently, research all over the globe is focusing mainly on aluminum alloy since its unique combination of good corrosion resistance, low density and outstanding mechanical properties [3].
