The residual stresses induced by any machining process
affects fatigue life, corrosion crack resistance and part distortion.
Therefore, residual stresses should be predicted better and the
cutting parameters should be arranged for minimum value. This
paper presents a 2D finite element analysis (FEA) on residual
stresses during hard turning of AISI 4140 steel with HSS tools.
The cutting parameters are chosen as feed rate and cutting speed
with three levels and constant depth of cut. In simulation after the
cutting process is finished, both the chip and tool are removed and
the workpiece can thermo-mechanically relax. The average of
three extraction points on eight different depths of machined
surface for residual stresses is calculated for better results. FEA
results showed that both tangential and axial residual stresses act
as tensile in the depths near the surface until about 75 µm while
they act as compressive stress after the depth of 75 µm until about
300 µm. Also, increasing cutting speed has decreasing effect on
tensile residual stresses while increasing effect on compressive
residual stresses.

The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in manufacturing of automotive, marine, sport, chemical
and biological equipment is gradually increasing as well as aerospace industry. Especially, the need for drilling of these
materials in tolerance of low roughness and suitable roundness because of requirement to high strength in assembly parts
is an important safety problem for aerospace industry. The hole surface integrity and delamination occurred in drilling of
the CFRP materials, which change depending on their characteristics properties which are anisotropy, heterogeneity and
laminated structure, and so affect the hole quality. Also, the thermomechanical responses (e.g., cutting force, cutting
temperature, chip formation) changing according to cutting conditions such as tool geometry, cutting speed and feed rate
are negatively affect the machinability of the CFRP. For these reasons, the selection of drill geometry and drilling
parameters has high importance due to in drilling of carbon fiber reinforced polymer which has anisotropy, heterogeneity
and laminated structure. This study focused on the effects of drilling parameters on the hole quality in drilling of carbon
fiber reinforced polymer composites by applying constant and varying feed rate with uncoated tungsten carbide.

In this study, the dimensional control of the ABS based evolvent profiled cylindrical gears produced in
3D printer by fused deposition modelling (FDM) method was investigated. For this purpose, three
different layer thicknesses of constant temperature with 3D printer were prepared. The dimensional
control of the test samples was carried out using image processing technology. The images of the
products were taken from a black background with a camera-microscope setup. The gray images
obtained by converting the color images to gray were thresholded to be 60 on the gray images. Thus,
2-bit images were obtained in which the products remained white and the background was black.
Erosion and subtraction were applied to these images respectively to obtain the outer boundaries of the
gear wheels. The boundaries obtained from the drawing program and the boundaries obtained from the
visuals were overlaid and the deviations between them were calculated. As a result, optimum
performance in terms of dimensional control was obtained in ABS based samples produced using the
lowest layer thickness.
