Ahmad Hamdi Akseki and His Works “Tafseer of ‘Wa’l-‘Asr’”
Abstract“Tafseer of ‘Wa’l-‘Asr’”, which was published by Istanbul Awqaf Press in 1246/1928 is one of the most important book of Ahmad Hamdi Akseki. In this paper, we handled the basic notions, which Akseki dealt with and sources of this book. We tried to identify his teachers’ influence on his ideas. Thus, we argued the influence of Muhammad ‘Abduh -just like Akseki’s expressions in the introduction of the book- on “Tafseer of ‘Wa’l-‘Asr’”. Because of the fact that Akseki lived in the national struggle period and that he tried to wake up the society by giving them some advices in Balkan Wars in Bulgaria and encouraged his students to support national struggle while he was teaching in al-Maktaba al-Bahriyya al-Shahānah, it’s very interesting that he attributed so much to Muhammad ‘Abduh, which tried to organize Muslim societies to get out from under resignation of defeat and to get rid of West’s domination. We also tried to estimate the reflections of the conjuncture on this book.
