Effect of Step Time on the Performance of an Eight Cylinder Gasoline Engine

Abstract

Effect of step time (the time between the successive engine speeds) on the performance of an eight cylinder gasoline engine is experimentally performed at laboratory conditions by means of the special software’s called “NetDyn” and “WinDyn”. During the experiments, the step time is changed from 3 s to 15 s within the successive speeds of 3500 rpm and 3750 rpm when the throttle valve opening position is also kept constant as 60 %. Engine power, engine torque, air-fuel ratio, mechanical efficiency, oil pressure, break mean effective pressure and exhaust gas temperatures are measured as a function of step time. As the step time was increased, it was observed that engine power, engine torque, mechanical efficiency, oil pressure, and break mean effective pressure decreased while exhaust gas temperatures increased.
