AbstractIn this study, a Turkish lignite from Afşin-Elbistan region were subjected to carbonization treatment to decrease the oxygen contents and the volatiles yields. For this purpose, the particle size of lignite was reduced to below 250 µm by grinding and then the ground samples were heated from ambient to the temperatures between 400-900°C in a tube furnace under nitrogen flow. The heating rate was 10°C/min and the samples were kept at the final temperatures for 30 min. The higher heating values (HHV) of the carbonized samples were determined and the highest values of HHV values were used as the criterion to choose the optimum carbonization temperature. The combustion characteristics were investigated by thermal analysis.
