The Effect of Nuclear Energy Production on the Current Deficit in Turkey
AbstractWith the high growth rates, Turkey is one of the countries increasing steadily their energy requirement. However, Turkey meet a very important part of this need with the imported energy sources. Energy and Natural Resources Ministry 2013 data indicate that 73,5% of Turkey's energy consumption meet with the imported sources and the part of 26.5% with local resources. In order to solve the current account deficit problem caused by energy imports, the energy needs of the country must be met with domestic resources. Among these alternatives, renewable energy sources and nuclear energy are preferable domestic sources. Despite the advantages and disadvantages of both, the high efficiency of nuclear energy has increased the importance of this resource in energy production. For this purpose in the study, it will be discussed the role of nuclear energy investments in its being reduced the current account deficit and in its being met of Turkey's energy consumption. The impact of these investments on the current account deficit of the country as well as the impact on production and employment will be investigated.
