AbstractIn this paper we present a cross-layer optimization method for adaptive video streaming in cellular networks. The proposed method makes use of a new scheduling algorithm, tailored to adaptive video streaming applications, which provides better allocation of radio resources in order to increase the video quality experienced by the users. After introducing our novel scheduling algorithm, we compare its performance with the stateof-the-art, using DASH as the adaptive video streaming technique and LTE as the cellular network technology. The results show that introducing DASH-awareness into the network increases the streamed video quality and the network utilization. We believe that the proposed novel cross-layer optimization method can also be applied to future cellular network technologies, such as 5G, where application-aware resource allocation will be crucial in supporting the required quality-of-service (QoS).
