Abstract

Compared to the other transport modes public railway systems are the most energy efficient mode. However, in proportion to increasing urbanizing and passenger load, intensive energy demand has been challenged in the railway sector. This increasing requires to innovative implementation solutions for the reduction of the energy consumption and reducing carbon emission. Railway stations are critical public buildings due to their large size and high occupant density. Because of vast open spaces and long operation hours, railway stations are intensive energy consumer. Integration innovative technologies to the railway station buildings is a step to achieve the goal of energy consumption and emission reduction. The energy efficiency measures and renewable energy using at the railway systems are still limited numbers, although many studies have been worked. In this paper the applications of solar energy to urban railway stations were examined for different countries, the potentials of solar technology application to the station platform roofs of the will be discussed. In this context, simulation of the application of the surface PV panels necessary for the energy consumption of the urban railway station is studied for the case of Istanbul metropolitan based on the quantitative data.
