The Russian Principalities Dominated By The Mongols From 1237 To 1240

Abstract

Mongol campaigns started with Genghis Khan in 1206, one of the most important events of the thirteenth century. After Genghis Khan, Ögeday came to the throne in 1227. Ögeday decided that the army under Batu leadership would campaign to Russia, East and Central Europe. The army started the campaign in 1236. Mongols firstly entered Russia from Ryazan. Then they went to Vladimir. They conqured Colomna and Moscow on their way, then they took control over the capital Vladimir. After Vladimir, northern Russian principalities such as Suzdal, Rostov, Gorodets, Tver, Torjok, Kozelsk were seized. After capturing northern principalities, Batu moved towards the South Russian principalities. After Pereyeslavl, Chernigov, the old capital, Kyiv, was in the hands of the Mongols. Ögeday's death stopped the Mongol campaigns. Batu finished the campaigns, then founded the Orda around the Idil river and connected the Russian principalities to him. Orda, founded by Batu as a result of the campaigns, and directed the political history of Russia region between 1241-1502.
