2018 Profiling Turkish Geotaravelers Using the Geotraveler Tendency

Geotourism has been dramatically growing in order to decrease the negative impacts of mass tourism as one of the various forms of sustainable tourism. As a result of this increase, it has also become important to understand the geotravelers’ profile who have tendency to buy more from local. There is an initiation to examine geotravelers’ tendencies and determine their profiles in various destinations. However, there is no study to understand Turkish geotravelers’ demographic features. In this direction, this study expands research on geotravelers’ profile using Boley and Nickerson’s (2013) Geotraveler Tendency Scale (GTS). Data were gathered from geotravelers who visited Kula and Pamukkale which are two geoparks in the Aegean Region in Turkey. Using Pearson Chi-square and MANOVA analysis, Turkish geotravelers were labeled using three segments of geotravelers (minimal, moderate and strong geotravelers) and tested the differences among their gender, education and age as well. This research confirms the applicability of GTS for segmenting geotravelers in Turkey.
