In recent years Work-Family Balance (WFB) notion is an important issue in the modern
organisations. A common view is that it occurs only in the framework of what the companies
do for their employees. For instance, human resource policies can provide flexibility and
enhance ‘choice’ to solve work-life balance related issues (Rasdi et al., 2011). However,
such choice impact on the ‘balancing’ term between work and other life notion diverse within
individual at different organisational level. While the demand to excel at work is so strong
that either family or other life takes a secondary position, the line between work and family
life has increasingly become blurred amongst the workforce. Thus, this study explores the
work-family balance practices (WFBPs) implementation amongst managers at the
individual-level in an organisation. The study has three main objectives: the first is to analyse
the understanding of the WFBPs notions amongst the respondent; the second is to examine
the possible effect on managerial role to individual work-life balance in the workplace, and
the third is to explore the practices provided in the Malaysian oil and gas (O&G) context.
The empirical investigation results from 34 participants by semi-structured face-to-face
interviews revealed that the cultural and faith belief on sector differences between the O&G
government-linked and private-linked companies has an impact on the employee’s work-life
balance. Using the thematic and cross- case comparative analysis, the result suggested clarity
and practicality on the various perceptions of the WFBPs notions into the actual practice and
its implementation in the workplace. From the individual perspective, the integration and
separation concept of work and family balance shared various experiences and practices,
especially in the O&G workplace setting. The understanding of term and action has taken
towards the WFBPs in the workplace amongst the managers and subordinates in the selected
company. Also, the cultural and faith belief value give directly on the managerial role and
attitude that influence their working performance.
