Smart lifesaving helmet for miners

Mehmet Bozdal Emrah Irmak

Abstract

Miners are vulnerable to any accidents like gaseous explosions, fire hazards, and landslides. Therefore, it is vital to have safety precautions. Thanks to the improvement in wireless communication and sensor technologies, we can implement a smart safety helmet. In this paper, we present the smart safety helmet which can help emergency service to reach miners faster and predict the potential explosions. The smart lifesaving helmet for miners integrates NFC tag, temperature sensor, accelerometer, and Wi-Fi connectivity. NFC tag prevents illegal access and access without the helmet. The accelerometer detects the user inactivity, free-fall, and inform the Ground Operations Center with abnormal activities while temperature sensor gives vital information about the atmosphere change inside the mining area. All the data is transmitted via Wi-Fi interface. A whole software implementation was done based on Texas Instruments Real Time Operating System (RTOS) in order to do provide accurate timing. A computer program called the Ground Operations Centre is coded in C# to interpret and show the vital data about the current situation inside the mine. TCP is used as a transmission protocol so proposed system ensures a reliable wireless communication network.
